Hi All!
As you may be aware, the Green Party is currently renegotiating the Programme for Government with the Fianna Fáil party.
In their 2007 manifesto, the Green Party stated that, 'The Green Party will seek legislation that would remove all gender specific terms from current legislation and regulations governing the granting of marriages to allow same-sex couples enjoy the rights and responsibilities of civil marriage'. In response to irrational resistence within the Fianna Fáil party to full marriage equality for same-sex couples, the Green Party has instead opted to compromise and push for the introduction of Civil Partnership as a short term solution.
While the Green party accepts that the proposed Civil Partnership Bill is not 'full equality', they have stated that it 'represents progress on the path towards full marriage equality'. This is inconsistent with the view of the current Minister for Justice, Dermot Ahern, who stated upon publication of the Bill that Civil Partnership is 'not a stepping stone to marriage'.
NOISE continues to believe that gay couples should not be forced into a situation where they are made to participate in their own discrimination out of urgent necessity to regularise their legal arrangements. As the Green Party holds the balance of power, they should act to ensure that Fianna Fáil lifts the ban on same sex marriage and they should refuse to participate in state-endorsed discrimination by recognising that the introduction of a half-measure of equality for same-sex couples is an unacceptable compromise of the Green Party election manifesto.
NOISE urges you to contact Green Party Deputies and Senators to ask them to re-introduce the principle of marriage equality for same-sex couples into their negotiations with Fianna Fáil. You can contact them on the following email addresses;
